This item worked OK for a few months. It soon started to make strange noises. Over the first 14 months of its life it frequently jammed and stopped working until I unjammed it. The process of unjamming it sometimes only took about 5 minutes but on at least three occasions it took about an hour.

It claims it can handle 10 sheets at a time. Mine could not. Mine could handle a maximum of 7 sheets and even then it sounded like it would not complete the job. I made sure I never put in more than 5 at a time and it usually worked OK.

It claims it can cut credit cards. Mine could not. It soldiered through one thin card but the second card jammed it.

It claims it can cut CDs and DVDs. I admit that I was not about to try this feature out after it failed with a credit card and more than 7 sheets of paper.

I'm sad this was purchased as a wedding gift for me. I hope the purchaser does not read this review and realize they wasted $50 + tax!

This item failed completely 14 months after purchase. Bed Bath and Beyond was not helpful (but I don't blame them - this was way past their return policy). However Homedics was willing to offer a replacement if I shipped it back to them. For $15. I was not willing to even spend $15 and hope they would eventually send me another one, especially since I needed a new shredder immediately. I luckily found a good one on sale at Frys for $25.

We got this as a wedding present. It worked well for about 6 months and then started jamming. When my husband cleaned it out, he said the teeth were damaged. I never shred anything that isn't expressly specified as acceptable, so I wrote to Homedics well before the warranty ran out asking what we could do about the problem. I never heard back. I contacted them again close to our anniversary and never heard back. For awhile it would work after it was unjammed, but now it's basically useless. Between the crap performance and the crap customer service, you can bet we'll be replacing this with a different brand.

Stopped working very well.Wouldn't start on auto,wouldn't finish shredding an inserted sheet. Wasn't reliable after about a year of use. Then I learned that you have to oil the teeth once a month. Also found out that paper accumulates and must be cleared from teeth. Cleared shredding teeth by sending card stock through the machine,oiled a piece of paper with cooking oil and sent it through and and now it works like new.

Wish the instructions that came with the shredder had provided this info.
So this shredder worked well for about a year with no care and total neglect.
